ETP Hydrogen Innovation Programme

June 2023

Through a funding award from the Energy Technology Partnership, the University of Dundee School of Engineering, Dalhousie Estates, Angus Council and Ristol Consulting are exploring the development of green hydrogen at the Angus Rural Mobility Hub.

The study will focus on developing the necessary modelling and system design to integrate and balance renewable hydrogen production to decarbonise heavy duty vehicles at the ARM Hub.

The HIP programme enables the modelling of micro grid and green hydrogen production to be tested and incorporated within the wider design process to facilitate an integrated clean energy and mobility strategy. Academic expertise with renewable energy and H2 production technology will build a high-level computational model for the site to inform the expected electrical and H2 yields from small/medium wind and solar renewable generation devices connected to an electrolyser. This would include temporal trends to identify possible generation outages, guiding the sizing and balancing of H2 and battery storage to provide specified daily H2 availability throughout the year and manage periods where generation is expected to be low. This will involve custom algorithms to suit the specific microgrid intended for the site and will be run over the summer with results published in the autumn of 2023.
