Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) research paper – an emerging Scottish context

January 2024

Through our research and land management work, RCL were commissioned by Perth & Kinross Countryside Trust and the Riverwoods Almond Headwaters programme to undertake a research study into the emerging BNG policy framework in the UK and the potential applications in Scotland, as part of a nature recovery strategy.

The study outlined the policy approached being adopted by the four nations of the UK, the development of a Scottish position and the opportunities this present for rural programmes and enterprises to align biodiversity enhancement and offsite financial contributions to landscape scale recovery programmes.

We explored policy development and early stage applications, models for calculating BNG, the potential policy framework to support delivering landscape scale nature recovery strategies in Scotland and early, pathfinder opportunities.
